Shopify developer and Shopify Expert are used almost interchangeably online, which makes it hard to know who you actually need. The terms describe different things: one is a technical role, the other is a label within Shopify's partner ecosystem. Understanding the difference will save you from hiring the wrong person for your project.
What Shopify Expert means
Shopify Expert is a title used inside Shopify's partner ecosystem. Shopify runs a partner directory where freelancers and agencies list services such as store setup, theme customization, development, marketing, and store management. The label signals that the person or company participates in that ecosystem and offers Shopify-related services. It is not, by itself, proof of a specific technical skill level, so always look past the title to the portfolio, the services offered, and client feedback.
What a Shopify developer does
A Shopify developer is defined by technical work, not by a directory listing. Developers build and modify themes using Liquid, Shopify's templating language, along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They create custom sections and templates, build private and public Shopify apps, integrate Shopify with ERPs, CRMs, accounting tools, and shipping systems through APIs, work with Shopify Functions and checkout extensibility, and handle performance optimization and platform migrations. If the work involves writing or reviewing code, you need a developer, whatever title they use.
Where the two overlap
In practice the Venn diagram overlaps heavily. Many developers list themselves as Shopify Experts in the directory, and many agencies employ both developers and non-technical specialists under one Expert listing. The confusion starts when the title is used as a shortcut for technical ability. A store-setup specialist who configures themes and apps can legitimately carry the Expert label without writing a line of code, while a senior Liquid developer might never bother with the directory at all.
The skills that are not development
Plenty of valuable Shopify work is not development. Store setup and product organization, conversion rate audits, email marketing setup, product photography direction, SEO fundamentals, and ongoing store management all fall under the broader Expert umbrella. If your store needs better product pages, a clearer navigation, or a marketing push, a non-developer specialist may be exactly right, and hiring a developer for that work would be overkill.
Which one does your project need
Match the person to the task. You need a developer when the project involves custom theme work beyond the theme editor, a custom app, an integration with another system, a migration with data mapping, checkout customization, or performance problems that settings cannot fix. You need a broader Expert or specialist when the project is store setup, theme configuration, content and product organization, marketing, or training your team to run the store. Large projects often need both, which is one reason agencies exist: the designer, developer, and marketer coordinate under one roof.
How to vet either one
The vetting process is the same regardless of the label. Ask to see live stores they worked on, not screenshots, and ask specifically what they personally did on each one. Ask how they handle a task outside their skill set; a good answer names the boundary and suggests who covers it. Confirm who owns the theme code and custom work when the project ends. Check how they communicate and whether their working hours overlap with yours. Titles are marketing, but live stores and clear answers are evidence. Frequently asked questions
Is a Shopify Expert certified by Shopify?
Not in the way most people imagine. The title comes from participation in Shopify's partner ecosystem and directory, not from passing a technical certification exam. Treat it as a starting point for vetting, not as a guarantee of skill.
Can a Shopify Expert build a custom app?
Only if they are also a developer. Ask directly whether the person doing your work writes code, and ask to see apps or custom theme work they have shipped.
Do I need both a developer and an Expert?
For a full store launch, quite possibly: a developer for the technical build and a specialist for setup, content, and marketing. Smaller projects usually need just one, matched to the actual task.
